Baixa

Baixa occupies the level grid between Rossio, Praça da Figueira and the Tagus. It is one of the easiest bases for a first visit to Lisbon: Chiado, Alfama and Mouraria are all within walking distance, and metro stations serve several sides of the area. The trade-off is that Baixa is geared more towards visitors than residents.

What Baixa is like.

The orderly streets date from the rebuilding that followed the 1755 earthquake. This straight grid links Praça do Comércio with Rossio, while old trade names survive in Rua dos Douradores, Rua dos Sapateiros and Rua dos Fanqueiros.

Pombaline façades, long-established shops, cafés and international chains now share the same blocks. The squares open out towards the castle and the river; the streets between them feel more commercial than residential.

Is Baixa right for you?

Baixa is particularly practical for a short stay or a first visit, especially if you want to return to your room during the day. It also suits travellers who prefer comparatively level ground. For quieter nights, lower prices or a more residential setting, compare it with Graça, Alfama or Príncipe Real.

Practicalities in Baixa.

Baixa-Chiado connects the Blue and Green metro lines; Rossio is on the Green line and Terreiro do Paço on the Blue. Trains to Sintra leave from Rossio station. Baixa is level by Lisbon standards, but the calçada paving is still uneven and some streets are pedestrian-only. A taxi may not be able to reach the door. Historic buildings can have stairs, small lifts or upper floors beyond the lift. Street-facing rooms may pick up late-night voices, early deliveries and tram noise.

Returning after dark

Baixa remains busy by day and well into the evening. Keep an eye on your phone and wallet around the squares, trams, metro stations and crowded stops. The area is not generally considered unsafe, but its concentration of visitors creates opportunities for pickpocketing. If your accommodation uses a door code, save the instructions before you arrive in case your connection fails.
