The historic house
Palácio das Especiarias is a 39-room historic house on Rua da Emenda, filled with painted ceilings, carved wood, antiques and rooms that bear little resemblance to one another. Breakfast is accompanied by live piano or violin, and the house also runs wine tastings. A small spa adds a sauna, hot tub and treatment rooms, available to guests by reservation.
The visual drama is real, but it makes category choice unusually important. Rooms range from about 13 to 41 square metres and may face the city, garden, courtyard or river. Some lower and inward-facing rooms have limited daylight, while older bathrooms can be compact. This is closer to staying in an idiosyncratic private palace than a uniform modern hotel, which is precisely the appeal for many guests.
Planning your stay
The property is registered as Turismo de Habitação with 39 rooms and capacity for 76 people. Current categories range from roughly 13 to 41 square metres, with city, courtyard, garden or river outlooks. Breakfast includes live music. The spa is open to guests aged 16 and over, by reservation, from 10:00 to 20:00.

Before you book
People choose the Palácio for atmosphere and generally find more of it than expected: richly decorated rooms, music over breakfast and staff who lean into the building’s sense of occasion. The house is not consistent in the way a purpose-built hotel is. Room size, natural light, bathroom proportions and outlook vary sharply, and the spa is intimate rather than resort-like. Study the exact category and do not assume the most photographed salon represents the room itself.

The area
Rua da Emenda runs through the quieter southern side of Chiado, above Cais do Sodré. Praça Luís de Camões is close, but the route to the river is steep and the narrow street can complicate a door-to-door transfer.
