The property
Solar do Castelo is hidden inside the walls of São Jorge Castle, around a quiet stone courtyard visited by the property's resident peacocks. Its 20 rooms are divided into Petite, Mansarda and Alfama categories, all relatively compact and all facing the courtyard or historic surroundings rather than a conventional city street. Breakfast runs until noon, and light room service remains available throughout the day and night.
The setting is exceptional, but arrival needs planning. Private cars are restricted in the castle quarter; taxis can enter, and the hotel offers a golf-cart transfer from the castle gate when available. The same lanes that feel wonderfully still after visitors leave can be awkward with large cases. Peacocks are part of the character and occasionally part of the morning soundtrack.
Planning your stay
Solar do Castelo advertises 20 rooms in three categories, with an official registered capacity of 24. Room sizes begin at approximately 14 square metres. The property has a lift, courtyard, garden, honesty bar, 24-hour reception and breakfast from 07:30 until noon. Vehicle access is restricted to authorised traffic and taxis; a golf-cart transfer from the castle gate is subject to availability.

Before you book
The courtyard and castle setting give the stay a quality that cannot be reproduced lower in the city. Service is notably considerate, and the late breakfast makes slow mornings possible. The practical compromises are equally distinctive. Petite rooms are genuinely small, vehicle access is restricted and the climb is tiring with luggage. A few guests also discover that peacocks do not observe hotel quiet hours. Choose it for the setting, with those conditions understood.

The area
Rua das Cozinhas lies within the controlled-access castle quarter above Alfama. The setting is peaceful once daytime visitors leave, but every route on foot involves cobbles, slopes or steps.
