The hotel
Santiago de Alfama is a family-run five-star hotel on the slope between the cathedral and the castle. Its 16 rooms and three suites range from compact doubles to larger king rooms and suites, with outlooks towards Alfama or the Tagus in selected categories. Audrey's restaurant and the Beauty Bar give the hotel a life beyond its bedrooms.
Service here is deliberately personal, but the building still works like a full hotel, with a lift, daily housekeeping, room service and staff on duty at all hours. Two rooms can connect and one Deluxe King is designed for accessible use. There are no guest-room balconies; the shared terrace on the third floor is the outdoor space to ask about if the view matters.
Planning your stay
The official register lists 16 rooms and three suites, with capacity for 35 people. The hotel has a lift, a Beauty Bar, a restaurant and round-the-clock room service. Breakfast is served à la carte from 07:30 to 11:30. Two rooms can connect, and Deluxe King room 101 is the accessible category. Pets are not accepted, apart from guide dogs.

Before you book
What distinguishes the hotel is not formality but attention. Staff learn how people are using their time in Lisbon, the restaurant is valued in its own right and breakfast feels unhurried. Rooms are quiet for such a central old-city address, although size and outlook change markedly between categories. Travellers choosing mainly for a river view should confirm the exact room, while anyone expecting private outdoor space should note that the terrace is shared.
This summary draws on guest reviews published between September 2025 and July 2026. We last reviewed it in August 2026.
The area
Rua de Santiago climbs through upper Alfama. Taxis can usually reach the hotel, but walking in either direction involves cobbles and a slope; the riverfront is below and the castle is above.
