A house built around space and shared meals
Santa Clara 1728 is a six-suite house overlooking the Pantheon and Campo de Santa Clara. Architect Manuel Aires Mateus reshaped the historic building around pale stone, broad proportions and a long communal dining table. Breakfast is shared rather than staged as a buffet, and the house can arrange dinners that bring guests together in the same room.
This is a deliberately quiet, residential kind of hospitality. There are no televisions, and the pleasure lies in the space, architecture and personal rhythm of the house. Families can use sofa beds in selected suites, but open bathroom layouts and the absence of conventional hotel facilities will not suit everyone. The Feira da Ladra closes the road to traffic on Tuesdays and Saturdays, when the square becomes busier. The house has no air conditioning and relies on thick walls and natural ventilation, an important consideration for a summer stay.
